2019 NPMT Coordinator

Upuli Pahalawatta

Dr Upuli (Li) Pahalawatta is a radiology resident at the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle NSW and a Conjoint Teaching Fellow at the University of Newcastle. Following her experiences in medical education within rural and regional NSW, she has a passion for encouraging good medical teaching and taking steps to help improve challenges within medical education. This has led her to working part time as an academic to develop an understanding of the education process from a formal faculty perspective as well as a student and educator.

Li  has been instrumental in developing and co-ordinating near-peer teaching programs for students within the Central Coast Medical School. She enjoys sharing her experiences with others and has presented at a number of national and international conferences.

To provide the most effective teaching she can, Li is currently completing a Masters of Clinical Education at Flinders University.

Nicholas Hewett

Dr Nicholas Hewett is a general resident based on the Central Coast in 2019 and developed a passion for teaching during medical school at Newcastle University, Australia. What began as a love of peer-centred teaching formally and informally while at university, grew to become a rich source of ongoing personal and professional development as a junior doctor. In 2019 Nick took on the role of STITCCH coordinator (NPMT tutorial chair) and established the npmteaching website in an ongoing effort to support fellow junior educators to teach.

2019 Bedside Teaching (PRAISE) Chair

Kieran Muir

Dr Kieran Muir is a general resident working on the Central Coast in 2019. He has led the bedside teaching division of the program this year, facilitating its expansion and the ongoing involvement of dozens of near-peer tutors.

2019 Skills Training Chair (RISSk)

James Rodway

Dr James Rodway is an Senior Resident working on the Central Coast in 2019 and has led the skills teaching division (RISSk). He has facilitated the performance of a number of tutorials in radiology, catheterisation, cannulation and surgical skills to name a few.
